Indians Trade Deadline News and Royals Series Recap

By Christopher Slack on July 31, 2014

With the Tribe losing three of four games in their recent series in Kansas City (July 24-27), one has to wonder about their playoff future.  The Indians currently sit 6.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers for first in the American League Central and are four games out of the final Wild Card spot.

It’s obvious that the Indians are buyers as the Trade Deadline approaches. With less than 24 hours to the deadline, the Indians announced a trade with the Cardinals, ridding themselves of struggling SP Justin Masterson and getting outfield prospect James Ramsey in return. They are still hoping to trade SS Asdrúbal Cabrera.

It’ll be hard for the Tribe to acquire a major talent as the Dolan family, the Indians owners, are notorious for not spending heavily on acquiring talent and trying to save as much money as possible. Whether the Indians make a trade or not, fans will know for sure by the Trade Deadline on Thursday (July 31) at 4 p.m.

Here is a recap of the series against the Royals:

Game 1 – July 24 (Indians 1, Royals 2)

The first game lasted almost five hours and fourteen innings. SP Corey Kluber carried a perfect game for the first seven innings until Omar Infante hit a single to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh.

The Royals would score in the bottom of the eighth as 3B Mike Moustakas hit a double to left field.  Indians LF Ryan Raburn missed the fair ball while diving for it and subsequently spiked it back into left field, allowing Moustakes to score on his double and the error.

The Tribe tied the game in the ninth as 1B Carlos Santana came home on a C Yan Gomes RBI single. However, the Indians went on to lose the game in the 14th inning when RF Nori Aoki hit a walk-off single that plated CF Lorenzo Cain.

Game 2 – July 25 (Indians 4, Royals 6)

In game two, the Royals started on a high note in the bottom of the second with back-to-back home runs by C Salvador Perez and Moustakas. The Indians got their offense in gear as Carlos Santana hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth that plated CF Michael Brantley. However, the Royals would maintain their lead in the bottom of the fourth as RF Raul Ibanez tripled to deep right, sending LF Alex Gordon home. Ibanez would end up scoring himself on a 2B Jason Kipnis error.

With the Royals up 4-3 in the top of the seventh, Kipnis hit a sacrifice fly to right field, sending in Gomes, thus tying the game at four each.  The Royals, however would end up winning the game in the bottom of the eighth as Billy Butler homered to deep left, sending Perez home with him.

Game 3 – July 26 (Indians 5, Royals 7)

In game three, the Tribe got off to a quick start with five runs in the second inning. Santana started the scoring with a home run to deep right.  Gomes followed by coming home on a 3B Mike Aviles RBI single.  Kipnis then doubled Aviles and RF David Murphy home. The scoring ended as Brantley doubled and sent Kipnis home.

In the third, the Royals got on the board as Infante grounds out to short and sends Escobar home.  In the fourth the Royals pulled even with four more runs, knotting the score at five apiece. Moustakas, Cain, Escobar, and Aoki all scored. In the fifth inning, Butler homered with Perez on base, giving the Royals a 7-5 advantage. The score would remain the same for the rest of the game, putting the Indians at 0-3 in the series.

Game 4 – July 27 (Indians 10, Royals 3)

In the final game of the series, the Indians’ offense rolled over the Royals in a 10-3 victory.

Things were not looking good for the Tribe early in the game as Butler and Aoki scored for the Royals in the second and third, respectively. After that, the Tribe would go on to get a run from SS Asdrubal Cabrera in the fourth.  C Roberto Perez, Brantley, Santana would all score in the fifth and Rayburn hit a home run in the sixth, giving the Indians a 6-2 advantage.

The Royals tried to rally in the bottom of the sixth as Gordon was plated off a Butler double. However, Brantley would score again in the seventh for the Tribe and Santana and Gomes each homered in the ninth to seal the victory.
